This space is designed to be a place where students from Mr. Soskil's classes in the Wallenpaupack South Elementary School can come together to find information, share ideas, display work, and show the world all of the great things they are learning. As the school year goes on we will be adding more, so make sure you check back.

Step 1 - Have students in your class identify and measure as many circular objects as you can. We are bringing pies into school to measure (because pies are tasty), but you can use any circular object that you can find. Measure the circumference and diameter of each object.
Step 2 - Record each of your measurements on our Pi Day Data Collection Spreadsheet. That spreadsheet will automatically calculate the ratio of circumference to diameter for each circle. Please make sure not to erase the data entered by other students. If possible, please enter all measurements by 1:45 PM Eastern Standard Time. At that time I will have the spreadsheet calculate the mean (average) and median values for the ratios of all the circles.

At that time I will have the spreadsheet calculate the mean (average) and median values for the ratios of all the circles.
Step 3 - Either have a discussion about what pi is with your class, see how close our classes across the country (globe) came to finding pi, and discuss whether median or mean is a better statistical measurement to use in this situation, OR join me at 2PM Eastern Standard Time for a short (15 min. or so) Google Hangout where we will discuss those topics. If you are joining us for the Google Hangout, please make sure that your microphone is muted during the call (with the exception of times that your class wants to speak to others). If you would like to participate in the call, please sign up using the form below.
